As a born and raised city boy who’s now a 30 year Mountain Stater, I continue to marvel at the incredible taste of home grown tomatoes, peaches and sweet corn. Right now is the time many growers whose farms surround Huntington are bringing what seems to be the freshest produce on earth to the Central City Farmers Market. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, pick-up trucks loaded with goodness back in to the shelter behind the Wild Ramp – and fill tables with their colorful, edible commodities – plus fresh flowers and farm raised beef. I’m told nearly all the produce is picked the day before it’s sold.
The Farmers Market is part of a continuing resurgence in Central City, harkening back to the days when the Huntington West End neighborhood was a hub of commerce. The Central City Farmers Market opens at 7am and continues until farmers are sold out. So, from now until October 27th, get fresh with your local farmers and then get all those strings out of those half-runners. For more info, go to centralcitymarket@yahoo.com or call 304-525-1500.
